Timber-Framing
Humans and trees have a deep ancestral, spiritual and social relationship that expands across the world, cultures and time periods. Timber-framing is a framing methodology that uses traditional wood joinery to build elegant, functional and timeless structures. Timber framing, while not in great use today, is a traditional method that relies upon local available timber (round or square), specialized yet accessible knowledge and skill, use of hand and or power tools and mental judo & creativity.
Here at Craft Well, we will explore all the forms that timber-framing has taken from eastern styles to western methods. We will focus on square-rule designed frames as the basis, as this is a system that was developed in the US in the mid to late 1800’s. We will also explore the interplay of timber-framing with natural and conventional building systems. Timber can be found all over the world, we intend for our focus to make the connections between design, place, social relations, nature and working together.
