Black String Band Jam

black-stringband-circa-1900.jpg

Join us for a monthly jam that celebrates and explores the influence of the African diaspora on Roots Music. Open to all skill levels, we will gather and learn traditional repertoire from blues, old-time, country, soul, bluegrass, spirituals, reggae and world folk traditions.

Bring your acoustic instruments like guitar, banjo, fiddle, bass, mandolin,n’goni, kora, bones, tambourine, shakerie and other percussive instruments. Some jams will feature guest teachers who will share songs and stories from their repertoire and tradition. Other jams will provide participants with the opportunity to share their repertoire. There will also be a running list of songs for folks to learn that will be played at the jam.

We will learn by ear, explore the history of these musical traditions and trace how songs travel across regions and cultures. This is a collaborative, community space, that aims to reconnect our community to the musical traditions of our ancestors, while also encouraging us to build new musical and cultural traditions.

Come build repertoire, deepen your musical knowledge, and participate in a living exchange of sound, history, and culture.
